A man's own observation, what he finds good of and what he finds hurt of, is the best physic to preserve health. Learning is not only like health, it is health. p. 282 [Marilyn Ferguson](https://www.leafyquotes.com/marilyn-ferguson.md) · [The Aquarian Conspiracy](https://www.leafyquotes.com/marilyn-ferguson/the-aquarian-conspiracy.md) — [Quote page](https://www.leafyquotes.com/marilyn-ferguson/the-aquarian-conspiracy/if-we-are.md) Topics: [education](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/education.md), [health](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/health.md) > “The problem with you,” Force said, “is that you’re so used to pain and discomfort that your definition of feeling okay is not the greatest indicator of being okay.” [Nnedi Okorafor](https://www.leafyquotes.com/nnedi-okorafor.md) · [Noor](https://www.leafyquotes.com/nnedi-okorafor/noor.md) · p. 185 — [Quote page](https://www.leafyquotes.com/nnedi-okorafor/noor/the-problem-with.md) Topics: [suffering](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/suffering.md), [health](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/health.md) > The word "vegetarian" derives from the Latin "vegetus"—whole, sound, fresh, lively. The meat humans eat is neither whole, sound, fresh or lively. It is dis-limbed, tainted, decaying, stale and dead. A diet consisting of green leafy vegetables, root crops, grains, berries, nuts and fruits supplies all the body needs for strength and well-being. It is healthful food, aesthetic, economical, harmless to our brother animals, easy to grow, to prepare and to digest. Flesh-eating by humans is unnecessary, irrational, anatomically unsound, unhealthy, unhygienic, uneconomic, unaesthetic, unkind and unethical. You live on memories of what was and fantasies about what might have been. Both can be deadly to the man who loses sight of the demarcation between them and reality. [Glen Cook](https://www.leafyquotes.com/glen-cook.md) · [Sweet Silver Blues](https://www.leafyquotes.com/glen-cook/sweet-silver-blues.md) · p. 34 — [Quote page](https://www.leafyquotes.com/glen-cook/sweet-silver-blues/there-is-no-way.md) Topics: [memory](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/memory.md), [dreams and aspirations](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/dreams-and-aspirations.md), [health](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/health.md) > Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. We don’t merely imagine that the placebo antidepressant is working to life our sadness or worry—the brain is actually producing extra serotonin in response to the mental prompt of swallowing a pill containing nothing but sugar and belief. What all this suggests is that the workings of consciousness are both more and less materialistic than we usually think: chemical reactions can induce thoughts, but thoughts can also induce chemical reactions. [Michael Pollan](https://www.leafyquotes.com/michael-pollan.md) · [The Botany of Desire](https://www.leafyquotes.com/michael-pollan/the-botany-of-desire.md) · p. 171 — [Quote page](https://www.leafyquotes.com/michael-pollan/the-botany-of-desire/the-brain-can.md) Topics: [thinking](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/thinking.md), [health](https://www.leafyquotes.com/topics/health.md) > Beauty and nature often shows up in the vicinity of sex—think of the plumage of birds or mating rituals through out the animal kingdom. “Sexual selection”—that is, evolution’s favoring of features that increase a plant’s or animal’s attractiveness and therefore it's reproductive success—is the best explanation we have for the otherwise senseless extravagance of feathers and flowers, maybe also sports cars and bikinis. In nature, at least, the expense of beauty is usually paid for by sex. > > There may or may not be a correlation between the beautiful and the good, but there probably is one between beauty and health. (Which, I suppose, in Darwinian terms, is the good.) Evolutionary biologists believe that in many creatures beauty is a reliable indicator of health, and therefore a perfectly sensible way to choose one mate over another. Gorgeous plumage, lustrous hair, symmetrical features are “certificates of health,” as one scientist puts it, advertisements that a creature carries genes for resistance to parasites and is not otherwise under stress. A fabulous tail is a metabolic extravagance only the healthy can afford. You are free to choose to ignore it, but you should not be unduly surprised if you are subsequently over-run by invaders. [Iain M.
